Why Only a Few Stocks Create Real Wealth

Huge Wealth Creation
The US stock market has created a massive amount of wealth over time. Around 91 trillion dollars of wealth has been generated.

This number looks very big and exciting. It shows how powerful the stock market can be. But there is something important hidden inside this data that most people do not notice at first.

Most Stocks Fail
When we look deeper, we see a surprising fact. Almost 60% of stocks did not create wealth. In fact, they destroyed wealth. This means more than half of the stocks gave negative results. This is a strong reminder that not every stock goes up over time. Many stocks actually go down and never recover.

Few Stocks Save the Market
Around 37% of stocks only helped to balance the losses created by the weaker stocks. They did not create big wealth, but they helped in reducing the damage. The real shock comes from the top performers. Only about 3.7% of companies created the full 91 trillion dollars of wealth. This means a very small group of stocks did all the heavy work.

Almost Zero Overall Impact
If we combine all the stocks, about 96% of them together gave almost zero result. This means they either failed or just balanced each other out. Only less than 4% of stocks truly created wealth. These companies are often strong and long-lasting businesses that survived tough times and kept growing.

Changing Trend Over Time
In earlier decades like the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, stock markets performed very strongly. Around 70–80% of stocks were able to beat safe returns like treasury bills.

But over time, this number has fallen. Now, only about 50% of stocks are able to beat risk-free returns. This shows that making money in the market has become more difficult.

Stock Selection Matters
Today, simply buying any stock and holding it is not enough. There is no guarantee that it will give better returns than a bank. Choosing the right stocks has become very important. Wealth is mostly created by a small number of winning stocks. So, the focus should be on finding strong companies and staying invested in the parts of the market that are performing well.
