A very strong data chart shows the long-term view of gold compared to the S&P 500. This chart covers almost 100 years. It clearly shows that only a few times in history, gold has given a signal that it may move faster than stocks. These signals are rare but very powerful when they appear.
Four Important Phases
In the last 100 years, this signal came only four times. The first time was in the 1930s, then in the 1960s, then in 2001, and now again in 2023. Every time this signal came, gold started moving ahead of stocks. This does not mean stocks stop growing, but it shows a shift in market strength.
Commodities Take the Lead
During these periods, commodities, energy, and oil usually perform better than normal stocks. Right now also, we can see gold moving up strongly. Oil prices have also gone up, and energy stocks are rising fast. In past cycles, these sectors have given very big returns, sometimes even hundreds of percent over time.
Long-Term Trend Matters
These signals do not last for a short time. In the past, one phase lasted around 15 years. Another phase lasted almost 20 years. One more phase continued for about 12 years. Right now, only 2–3 years have passed in the current phase. This means the journey may still be long.
Smart Investment Balance
This does not mean you should stop investing in stocks. But it shows that commodities, oil, and energy may perform better in this phase. When the trend changes and moves downward, like in 1941, 1981, or 2013, then it is better to focus more on normal stocks and less on gold and energy.
