Nifty Has Stayed Below 200 DMA for 103 Days

Nifty is currently facing a drawdown of around 11.5%. But the bigger point is how long it has stayed below its 200-day moving average (200 DMA). Nifty has now spent 103 days below the 200 DMA.

This is the ninth-longest such period in its history. Only eight times before has Nifty stayed below its 200-day moving average for more than 100 days.

The Fall Is Still Not Very Big

What makes the current situation interesting is the size of the fall. Even after staying below the 200 DMA for 103 days, Nifty is down only around 11.5%. This is actually the lowest fall among the eight earlier periods being compared, covering events from 1992 to 2015. In simple words, the market has stayed weak for a long time, but the fall has not been very deep.

History Shows That These Phases End

Looking at history, periods when Nifty stays below its 200 DMA for a long time have eventually ended. The market has recovered and moved higher over time. One important reason is that the index itself keeps changing. Nifty is reviewed and rebalanced every six months. Very weak stocks can be removed from the index and better-performing stocks can take their place.

The Index Can Recover Over Time

This makes the long-term recovery of the index more likely. An individual stock can remain weak for many years, but the index does not stay the same. Poor-performing companies can be removed during the rebalancing process. Because of this, the index can slowly improve as stronger companies become a bigger part of it.

A Rare Market Situation

The current setup is already looking extreme from a historical point of view. Nifty has spent 103 days below its 200 DMA, while the fall is still only around 11.5%. Another important sign is how the market is reacting to bad news. Even when negative news comes out, Nifty is not falling sharply. This may suggest that much of the weakness is already priced into the market.

Is Nifty Recovery Near?

No one can know exactly when the recovery will begin or how fast it will happen. But history gives some reason for hope. The current period has already become an unusual one because of the long stay below the 200 DMA and the relatively small fall. If this pattern continues, a recovery in Nifty and a move back above the 200-day moving average could come sooner than many investors expect.
