Five-Year Stock Market Returns Have Fallen Sharply
Many investors are disappointed as five-year returns from the Indian stock market have fallen sharply. Large-cap stocks have seen a major drop in their returns, with the five-year rolling CAGR of the Nifty 100 falling from around 24% at its recent peak to just 8%.

This is a big change for investors who had become used to strong returns over the past few years. The fall shows that even when the stock market performs well for a long time, returns can change quickly.
Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Returns Have Also Dropped
Mid-cap and small-cap stocks have also seen a sharp fall in their five-year returns. Mid-cap returns had reached around 35% during the strong market rally after COVID-19, but they have now fallen to 15%. Small-cap returns also dropped from a peak of 38% to 15%. While this may look disappointing, returns in these two groups are still close to their long-term historical averages. The bigger concern is the Nifty 100, where returns are now much lower than the historical average.
Foreign Investor Selling Is Adding to the Pressure
One major reason for the weakness in large-cap stocks is the continued selling by foreign investors. They have been selling these stocks at different price levels, putting more pressure on the market. The strong returns seen in the past created high expectations among investors. Now, the market has moved in the opposite direction, bringing a period of poor returns and losses. However, market trends do not last forever. After a period of strong gains and a later period of pain, the trend can change again.
Long Periods of Weak Returns Are Part of Investing
The stock market does not always move up in a straight line. Sometimes, investors have to wait for years while the market moves sideways or delivers weak returns. Experienced investors may have already seen such periods, but new investors could be facing this situation for the first time. During these times, it becomes difficult to decide which stocks to buy, which ones to sell, and when to make a change. Trying to predict the exact point when the market will turn is very difficult.
Why Investors Need a Clear Investment System
A clear investment system can help investors deal with these difficult periods. Without a proper plan, every fall can create fear and every buying or selling decision can feel stressful. Investors may keep holding losing stocks because they hope prices will recover, while missing new stocks that are doing better. A good system can help remove this emotional pressure by setting clear rules for managing a portfolio. Instead of making every decision based on fear or hope, investors can follow a planned process.
Follow Winners and Exit Losing Stocks
One useful approach is to have a system that regularly identifies strong stocks and removes weak ones from the portfolio. This allows investors to move towards stocks that are performing well instead of holding on to losing stocks for too long. Such a method cannot remove all risks or guarantee profits, but it can make decisions more disciplined and less emotional. The main lesson is simple: investors do not need to predict every market turn if they have a clear process to manage their investments through both good and bad times.
