Where is the market headed?

A steep 11% single-day drop in Indonesia’s composite index highlighted the vulnerability of markets with thin trading volumes to global index modifications. The drop followed indications that MSCI, where Indonesia holds a minimal weightage, is considering removing the country from its index entirely. Market participants reacted immediately, driving prices sharply lower. For context, India currently holds approximately an 11% weightage in the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. A reduction in India’s weightage to 8% or 9% could spark a foreign capital outflow of $20 billion to $30 billion. Standard risk evaluations rarely factor in such black swan occurrences.

The sell-off pushed the Indonesian market back to price levels recorded 31 years ago. While such extreme market behavior appears distant in the Indian context, monitoring these global developments underscores the unpredictable risks inherent in equity investing and reinforces the importance of structured asset allocation.

Market Overview

Closing out the week, the Nifty advanced 0.65% for a second consecutive session to finish at 23,146. This movement matched projected target levels following the recent upward trend, bringing the index to an immediate resistance zone that will serve as an upcoming test. A key positive feature of the session was the index closing at its highest point of the day, signaling sustained buying interest through the close and leaving room for potential continuation.

Major Market indices

In contrast, the rest of the domestic market remained muted. Small-cap and mid-cap indices showed little movement, Bank Nifty remained flat, and Nifty Next 50 rose 0.46%, indicating a near-freeze in buying activity across broader equities.

Heat Maps

The session was anchored by major IT names, with Infosys, TCS, and HCL Tech delivering strong performances. Gains were also seen in Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hindalco, and Bharti Airtel.

Among top 500 stocks, the highest trading turnovers were recorded by Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, and HBL Engineering, with HBL Engineering surging over 17%. Key market heavyweights including TCS, Infosys, HDFC, and Reliance also logged substantial turnover.

On the downside, BSE fell 2%, Persistent Systems dropped 2%, and counters such as Shriram Finance and MCX experienced soft trading. Meanwhile, Indian Hotels rose 4%, Wipro gained 5.9%, and Mahindra & Mahindra posted strong gains, contributing to a balanced session overall.

Advance/Decline Trend

Market breadth remained balanced, with 257 advancing stocks against 240 declining stocks.

Sectoral Overview

Sectorally, activity was quiet across most spaces, with oil and gas emerging as the weakest performer, declining 0.5%. Conversely, the IT sector continued to act as a primary indicator for the artificial intelligence trade, gaining another 4%. Over the past month, IT has led market performance with nearly a 10% gain, closely followed by Nifty Media at 9%. On a one-year basis, IT remains down by roughly 10%, whereas over a six-month period, IT has traded flat while Media led all sectors.

Over the last three months, IT and Media stand out as the only positive sectors, while all other sectoral indices sit in negative territory. Specific stocks including Tech Mahindra jumped 8%, alongside positive momentum in Wipro, TCS, Infosys, and LTI Mindtree. The IT index rapidly climbed from 28,000 to 32,000 across four sessions and is currently testing key overhead resistance.

U.S. Market Update

In the United States, the prior session ended in the green for the Dow Jones and Russell indices, while the Nasdaq traded flat and the S&P 500 recorded modest gains. Top US gainers included AppLovin, Intuit, Autodesk, CoreWeave, and Copart, each gaining 5% to 6%.

Conversely, stocks including Rocket Lab, Teradyne, Applied Materials, Cisco, and Lam Research lost ground, some of which feature in global tracking strategies. Software service providers like Autodesk gained traction amidst an anti-AI trade, whereas semiconductor firms Intel, AMD, Broadcom, and Nvidia declined. Mega-cap technology companies including Amazon, Google, and Apple traded quietly.

SpaceX and Tesla also registered declines despite a high-profile demonstration of a new vehicle utilizing jet propulsion technology to achieve 0 to 60 miles per hour in under one second. While this demonstrates significant engineering progress, its broader economic impact remains to be evaluated. Elsewhere, Netflix, ARM, and Qualcomm posted solid gains.

Tweet Of The Day

A prominent domestic development involved reported regulatory directives from SEBI regarding Gold Fund of Funds. Asset Management Companies reported halting fresh lump-sum investments and new Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) in gold fund of funds following regulatory guidance. Direct purchases of Gold ETFs remain permitted without restriction. This decision raises questions regarding whether authorities aim to curtail domestic gold demand and whether future restrictions could extend to ETFs.

A full ban on Gold ETFs remains unlikely due to public resistance and potential market distortions where ETF market prices could trade at extreme premiums over Net Asset Values (INAVs). Nevertheless, the policy appears intended to curb gold imports that drain foreign exchange reserves.

Given India’s large share of global gold demand, sudden import curbs could temporarily pressure global gold prices, though an extreme market crash remains unlikely. This policy shift reflects a wider trend of increasing intervention, following prior restrictions in insurance, healthcare, proposed airfare caps, and potential reductions to the Liberalized Remittance Scheme (LRS) limits from $250,000 to $50,000.

Additionally, unconfirmed analyst reports suggest that 30% to 40% of recently raised Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits have been deployed to support the rupee. As noted by industry expert Uday Kotak, currencies naturally seek equilibrium like water, and excessive intervention can undermine confidence among domestic and foreign investors.
