Where is the market headed?

As the trading week draws to a close on September 4th, the market landscape reflects a period of distinct consolidation. The Nifty index broke its established trend line and tested its 200-day moving average, yet managed to hold its ground near the 24,000 level rather than triggering a steep decline.

While minor fluctuations continue, significant losses remain absent across the broader market, offering a steady silver lining for investors.

Market Overview

The benchmark Nifty closed virtually unchanged with a marginal movement of 0.01 percent, marking three consecutive sessions ending right around the 23,900 mark.

Major Market indices

Broader indices saw minor adjustments as the Next 50 and Midcap indices dropped by a quarter of a percent, whereas Smallcaps gained 0.2 percent and the Bank Nifty ended flat. The domestic market currently appears stagnant, waiting for a fresh catalyst to drive momentum in either direction. Even crude oil trading at 96 to 97 dollars has failed to spur movement. Attention now shifts to the upcoming US non-farm payrolls data, where any disappointing figures could potentially trigger inflows into emerging markets and precious metals.

Heat Maps

On the index heatmap, positive support came from key stocks including Reliance, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, SBI Life, ICICI Prudential, Kotak Bank, JSW Steel, Adani Enterprises, and Tata Motors. Conversely, selling pressure in Maruti, Coal India, HCL Tech, Bharti Airtel, and PEL dragged the index lower.

A notable highlight of the trading session was Swiggy, which recorded the highest turnover among all top 500 stocks while gaining 2.5 percent, signaling significant activity. Anticipation surrounding the upcoming National Stock Exchange IPO drove strong interest in holding companies and capital market equities; IFCI rose 6 percent due to its NSE stake, BSE gained 3 percent on high turnover, and NIACL surged 17 percent.

Advance/Decline Trend

Market breadth post-noon saw the advance-decline ratio collapse to an equal split, remaining completely flat between noon and the 3:00 PM close.

Sectoral Overview

Sectoral trends highlighted strong momentum in Capital Markets and Metals, both advancing by 1 percent, whereas Real Estate declined by 1 percent and Pharma dropped 0.7 percent. Other sector indices remained confined within a tight half-percent range.

Within Capital Markets, individual names like Angel One, MCX, BSE, Motilal Oswal, and ABSL rallied between 1.5 percent and 5 percent, buoyed by the sentiment surrounding the NSE listing, with the sectoral chart forming a bullish flag pattern. In the Metal sector, buying action in APL Apollo Tubes, Tata Steel, Hindustan Zinc, JSPL, and JSW Steel reflected strong structural strength, positioning the sector to potentially challenge new highs.

U.S. Market Update

International markets displayed robust performance in the previous session, with the Nasdaq, Dow Jones, and S&P 500 all gaining over 1 percent, while the Russell 2000 index rose half a percent. Individual gainers were led by Strategy Inc., the Bitcoin-holding entity led by Michael Saylor, which surged 17 percent.

Other notable movers included Palantir Technologies up 7.7 percent, Space Exploration Technologies up 6 percent, Axon Enterprise up 6 percent, and CrowdStrike Holdings gaining 6 percent. On the downside, Kraft Heinz, Broadcom, Lumentum, Booking Holdings, and ASML experienced pullbacks.

The Nasdaq 100 heatmap reflected broad-based strength in mega-cap technology stocks including Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Nvidia, Google, Amazon, SpaceX, and Tesla. Readers should note that mentions of US stocks are for observational analysis regarding strategies and do not constitute direct investment recommendations.

Tweet Of The Day

In the macro segment, a tweet from Patterns highlighted that Indian banks currently hold 9.7 lakh crore rupees in surplus cash, marking the highest level on record. This unprecedented liquidity stems significantly from foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposit inflows, which have also supported a slight appreciation in the Indian Rupee, aligning with official liquidity objectives.

However, substantial surplus liquidity indicates subdued domestic credit deployment. Given rising global yields, high domestic liquidity presents a dual outlook: if effectively deployed, it could foster economic growth, but if underutilized alongside rising yields, it may eventually exert upward pressure on domestic interest rates.
