Weekend Investing Daily Byte – 6 November 2026

Where is the market headed?

Market sentiment can shift dramatically in a single week. On Friday, November 6, Asian equities experienced a severe downturn, with Japan falling as much as 7 percent, South Korea dropping 8.8 percent, and Taiwan slipping 9 percent. Overnight trading in the United States mirrored this selloff, with the Nasdaq dropping almost 6 percent, alongside sharp declines in the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

In stark contrast to global peers, India’s Nifty index reached a new seven-to-eight-month high within the last seven trading sessions. Over the past two weeks alone, the performance gap between Indian equities and major global markets reached high double digits, with the Nifty rising 10 percent while markets in Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan declined by nearly 10 percent.

This divergence signals a notable shift in the ongoing artificial intelligence trade. Capital is being redeployed into non-AI sectors, where Indian markets have demonstrated strong resilience. While capital flows are not uniform across all market capitalization tiers, frontline stocks are receiving the initial wave of foreign institutional inflows. Top-tier Nifty heavyweights that were heavily beaten down in previous months are now recovering, establishing a healthier market balance as large-cap names catch up while the broader market consolidates.

Market Overview

The Nifty has staged a remarkable rally over the last ten trading sessions, moving from near the 22,000 level to almost 25,000. Every single day of this upward movement was initially met with skepticism due to the prolonged market lull preceding it. However, the move caught short sellers and foreign hedge funds holding short index positions off guard. Fresh buying interest, combined with aggressive short covering, has fueled this momentum.

From a technical perspective, the Nifty has turned bullish across short, medium, and long-term timeframes. The index sits less than 10 percent below its all-time high, making a retest of those record levels increasingly probable if current momentum holds.

Major Market indices

Despite headline index gains, underlying market internals reflected noticeable divergence. While the Nifty index rose 2.01 percent and Bank Nifty advanced 2.2 percent, the Nifty Next 50, mid-cap, and small-cap indices all closed lower. Market breadth also leaned toward decliners, with 275 declining stocks against 220 advancing stocks, confirming that index gains were driven by select large-cap components rather than broad market participation.

Heat Maps

Large-cap banking and heavyweight stocks spearheaded the movement. ICICI Bank advanced nearly 5 percent, HDFC Bank rose nearly 4 percent, and Mahindra & Mahindra gained 5 percent. Other notable gainers included Bharti Airtel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, SBI Life Insurance, Adani Ports, and NTPC. FMCG majors ITC, Hindustan Unilever, and Nestle posted marginal gains, whereas Tata Motors and Eicher Motors experienced minor pullbacks following previous sessions of strength.

Across the broader Nifty 500 space, significant trading turnover was recorded in Groww, which fell 4 percent. CG Power, TD Power, and Motherson also registered declines. Conversely, positive momentum was seen in Suven Life Sciences, Kalyan Jewellers, MCX, Titan, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Yes Bank advanced 6 percent, while Shriram Finance surged 12 percent.

On the losing side, Thermax stood out as one of the day’s steepest decliners, falling 17 percent, while Welspun Corp also surrendered recent gains. Companies supplying components and infrastructure for data centers faced selling pressure, tracking a violent global correction in AI-related equities where several international stocks have declined 30 to 50 percent in recent weeks.

Advance/Decline Trend

Sectoral Overview

Sector-wise, private banking led domestic gains with a 3.2 percent increase, followed by financial services at 2.5 percent, services at 1.6 percent, and consumption at 1.2 percent, with remaining sectors registering gains between 0 and 1 percent. On the downside, defense stocks slipped 0.92 percent as market commentary following US midterm election results focused on potential resolution of international conflicts, while the media sector declined 1.52 percent.

Sector of the Day

Nifty Private Bank Index

The private banking segment-driven by Yes Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank-exhibited a technical flagpole breakout on its chart index, indicating potential for continued structural strength before entering a consolidation phase.

U.S. Market Update

The preceding US session witnessed severe selling, representing the largest single-day percentage fall for the Nasdaq since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Nasdaq declined 6.3 percent, the Dow Jones dropped 3.5 percent, the S&P 500 fell 4.5 percent, and the small-cap Russell index dropped 4.5 percent.

Several high-profile technology and semiconductor stocks suffered heavy double-digit losses. Micron, Western Digital, Lumentum, Astera Labs, and SanDisk fell between 17 percent and 22 percent. Bucking the downward trend, AppLovin surged 31 percent, alongside modest gains in Warner Bros. Discovery, PDD Holdings, Take-Two Interactive, and Costco Wholesale, some of which feature in specialized US equity strategies.

The market heatmap reflected widespread declines across major technology firms. Nvidia, the second-largest company by market capitalization, dropped nearly 10 percent, wiping out approximately half a trillion dollars in market value in a single trading session. Major semiconductor stocks including Micron, AMD, Intel, ARM, Cisco, ASML, and Broadcom recorded steep double-digit declines.

Electric vehicle and tech growth stocks were similarly affected, with Tesla falling 11 percent—having generated no net profit over the last five years—and SpaceX declining 9 percent. Tech behemoths Amazon, Walmart, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir (down 10 percent) recorded substantial losses.

The primary driver behind this sharp repricing stems from political developments following the US midterm elections. With Democrats securing control of both congressional houses, legislative intent to introduce stricter regulatory oversight on the artificial intelligence sector triggered immediate risk reduction across AI and broader technology equities.

Tweet Of The Day

In currency markets, the Indian rupee displayed strong positive momentum, appreciating back to the 94 mark against the US dollar—a level last registered six months ago.

This recovery in the rupee is supported by three main factors: a sharp decline in global crude oil prices, the cool-off in the global AI trade that previously drove capital outflows, and sustained foreign institutional investor inflows into domestic equities over recent sessions. Technical patterns suggest that breaking below current support levels could open up further room for rupee appreciation.
