India may get Trump opportunity

October 15, 2024 3 min read

The upcoming U.S. elections are an exciting moment, not just for the U.S., but for many countries around the world. What happens in these elections could have big impacts on international trade. The results could lead to changes in global business relations, and one of the countries that could feel these changes deeply is India. Depending on who comes into power, India might be looking at a unique opportunity for growth in trade.

What Happens If Trump Wins

If Donald Trump and his team win the election, one of the first things they are likely to do is put heavy duties on Chinese goods coming into the United States. This could make it harder for Chinese products to reach American markets. When this happens, it opens a door for other countries, like India, to step in and fill the gap. While India doesn’t have the large manufacturing capacity that China does, there is still a chance for the country to benefit from the changes. If India plays its cards right, this could be a golden opportunity to boost trade with the U.S. and other markets.

India’s Manufacturing Challenges

It is important to remember, however, that India’s manufacturing industry is not as big or as advanced as China’s. India cannot completely replace China in supplying goods to the U.S. market. But there are areas where India can shine. If there is a gap left by China, India can step in and do well in certain sectors. This situation would require India to act quickly and take advantage of the chance to grow in areas where it has potential.

On the other hand, if Kamala Harris and her team take office, the scenario may look very different. In that case, there would likely be a continuation of the current U.S. policies toward China. This means that while the U.S. does not fully embrace China, it does not go out of its way to create barriers either. In this situation, things would continue as they are now, with no major disruptions in trade between China and the U.S. For India, this might mean fewer immediate opportunities in terms of stepping in to replace China in the U.S. market.

India Must Stay Prepared

No matter who wins the U.S. elections, India needs to be prepared. The potential election of Trump would bring significant changes to the global market. This could be a time of uncertainty but also one of great opportunity for countries that are ready to act. India should keep an eye on the developments and be ready to take advantage of any gaps that may appear in the global trade system.
